I just purchased this Mt Washington Glass Co. vase from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The piece was produced as part of their "Lava" / "Sicilian Ware" line which was first introduced in 1878. They produced this form in at least two sizes, this is the 8 ½" high example. The gloss black ground features patches of applied glass in a variety of bright colors. The face features a hand painted Japonisme inspired design in gold enamel with a heron / crane flaying over a flowering prunus bush. I personally have never had a piece of this before so please ask any questions you might have after evaluating the pictures. As far as condition, there are no chips or hairlines. The black surface shows only a very few fine, faint short scratches (you really have to look). Many of the patches have shallow production open air bubbles (most are pinhead with the only large one pictured in the pink patch). The gold enamel is the only real issue showing pictured wear. The underside base with circular ground pontil mark shows pictured shelf / contact wear on the foot ring.
